If Pigou Club fails..
jan/071
There is a small chance that Pigou Club will not achieve its goals (I know what you’re thinking – “no way, Pigovian taxes will be here next month”). Here is a short video thats shows us exactly what will happen.
Now think about it.. would you want to be that last guy?
Oil consumption doesn’t hurt anyone!

Daniel Kahneman, a Nobel laureate in economics wrote an article for Foreign Policy about people being too optimistic.
“Excessive optimism is one of the most significant biases that psychologists have identified.”
I don’t have time to think about the artice right now.. I’m expecting a huge increase in Pigou Club membership and have to prepare the web page for millions of visitors.
Climate in 2006
jan/070
Today NOAA published the data for the last year. ![]()
“Globally averaged land temperatures were +0.78°C (+1.40°F) and ocean temperatures +0.45°C (+0.81°F) above average”
It was the hottest year in the USA.
There were also a few places where the temperatures were lower than the average. I will not draw any conclusions because I’m no climate expert.
Chrysler economist in Pigou Club
jan/070
Chief economist of the car company Chrysler Van Jolissaint made some remarks that
could put him in the Pigou Club. He says: “make small and limited changes in policies relating to global warming, such as a slight increase in gasoline or carbon taxes.”
The Pigou Club has no opinion (as far as I know) about the size of carbon taxes so I think he qualifies.

Video about global warming

Here is a speech about global warming presented for Google employees. It is like the Al Gore movie but this time from a real scientist that researches the climate. He bashes economics a bit, but we can probably forgive him for that.
The point for the Pigou Club is – the costs of carbon dioxide emissions are real.
Stern Report
jan/073
Economists’ Free exhange in his latest posts reports: “every time I sit down with an economist today, the Stern Report on global warming comes up”.
Stern report argues that we should use 0% discount rate when discounting future costs of carbon dioxide emissions. A lot of economists disagree, one of the most prominent critics is W. Nordhous (co-author of Samuelsons book of Economics).
The use 0% discount rate also raises new questions, Free exhange is applying it to abortions and concludes that abortions can only make sense when the discount rate for utility is >0.
Correction by Valuethinker: “Stern actually uses a 0.1% discount rate.”
